Replacing or fitting a belt is a planned job: reel handling, pulling, splicing, tensioning and tracking, all inside a shutdown window. Conveyor belt installation done well gives a belt that runs true from day one. ConveyorBelting.co.za helps you find installers. Describe your belt, your conveyor and your site, and we pass your request to independent conveyor belt installation companies. They contact you and quote directly. We are not an installer and sell nothing ourselves. The request is free and there is no obligation to accept any quote.

What an installation includes

A full job usually covers more than pulling in the belt. Ask contractors to price each stage:

  • Inspection of the frame, idlers, pulleys and take-up
  • Removing the old belt and cutting it up for disposal
  • Reel handling, belt pulling and winding with winches
  • Splicing: hot vulcanised, cold bonded or mechanical
  • Tensioning, tracking and commissioning

Many sites also use the shutdown to change idlers, lagging and scrapers. Ask whether disposal of the old belt is included, as heavy belts need lifting gear and transport.

Belt replacement and new conveyors

On a belt replacement, the old belt is often used to pull the new one through, which saves time. Reels must be rolled and lifted correctly so they do not telescope or kink. For new conveyor installation, the contractor works with the frame installer. Frame alignment, pulley levels and idler spacing set how well the belt tracks. Ask whether the price includes cranes, scaffolding and a splicing crew, or whether you supply them.

Splicing, tension and tracking

The splice is the weakest point in any belt. Steel-cord belts need a multi-stage vulcanised splice made by a trained splicer. Textile belts use stepped hot splices, cold splices or, on light belts, finger splices. Check that the splice type suits the belt's rating, whether SANS 1173, SANS 1366 or DIN 22102 specifications apply. After fitting, the belt is tensioned and tracked at low speed, then run empty and loaded to confirm it stays central. Ask for a record of splice details and tension settings, so the next crew can work from it.

Planning the shutdown

Delays cost more than the job. Agree the date, the shutdown window and who supplies power, lifting equipment and access. Confirm that the belt is delivered before the crew arrives. Contractors must follow lock-out procedures under the Mine Health and Safety Act or the OHS Act, and provide method statements, risk assessments and proof of training. Weather matters too: summer storms and strong wind can stop reel handling and crane work, so allow some float in the programme.

Comparing quotes for conveyor belt installation

The lowest rate is not always the cheapest job. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Scope: what is included, the method to be used and which materials and consumables the contractor supplies.
  • Time on site: crew size, hours needed and whether they can work inside your shutdown window or at night.
  • Safety and paperwork: site induction, medicals, risk assessments and lock-out procedures for mine or plant work.
  • Guarantee: what the contractor guarantees, for how long, and the call-out terms if something fails.

What to include in your request

  • Belt width, length, type and rating
  • Conveyor length, incline and drive layout
  • Whether the installer supplies the belt
  • Shutdown dates and available lifting equipment
  • Site address and safety induction requirements

Frequently asked questions

Are you a conveyor installer?
No. ConveyorBelting.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent installation contractors, who quote you directly and carry out the work if you accept. There is no charge for the request and no obligation to go ahead.
Does the installer supply the belt?
Some do, many do not. Installation can be labour only, with the belt bought separately from a supplier, or a combined supply and fit price. Say in your request which you want, and ask each contractor to state clearly what is included.
How long does a belt replacement take?
It depends on belt length, width, type and access. A short light belt can be done in a day. A long steel-cord or multi-flight belt can take several days, including splicing and curing. Ask each contractor for a programme that fits your shutdown window.
What do I need to give the contractor?
Send the belt width, length, type and rating, the conveyor drawing or photos, the number of splices expected and the site address. Add the shutdown dates, available lifting equipment and safety induction requirements so quotes cover the real job.
