Conveyor pulleys drive, turn and tension the belt, and their condition decides how well the belt tracks and grips. ConveyorBelting.co.za is a free quote-request service. Describe the pulley position, diameter, face width and lagging you need, and independent suppliers and workshops quote you directly. We do not make or sell pulleys, and there is no charge or obligation. Use one request to compare a new pulley for conveyor belt duty, or a re-lagging of an existing drum.

Types of conveyor pulleys

A pulley is a fabricated steel drum on a shaft with bearings. Position gives the type:

  • Drive pulley: the powered drum at the head or tail that moves the belt
  • Tail pulley: returns the belt at the loading end
  • Bend and snub pulleys: change direction or increase wrap
  • Take-up pulleys: hold tension through gravity or screw systems

Wing pulleys self-clean at the tail, since material falls through the open cage. Drum pulleys are the norm elsewhere.

Pulley lagging: rubber and ceramic

Pulley lagging is a layer on the drum face that improves grip between the belt and the pulley, so the drive can transmit power without slip. Plain rubber lagging suits light duty. Diamond-grooved rubber lagging sheds water and fines on wet conveyors. Ceramic lagging uses ceramic tiles in a rubber backing and gives the highest friction and wear life, which suits high-tension mine belts and wet conditions.

Lagging can be bonded on cold or hot vulcanised. Cold-bonded strips are easier to fit on site. Poor lagging leads to belt slip, heat and wear on both belt and drum.

Sizing and specifying a pulley

Pulley diameter must be large enough for the belt carcass. A steel-cord belt needs a bigger drum than a thin textile belt, or the cords fatigue. Face width is wider than the belt to allow for tracking. Provide the shaft size, bearing type, bore, belt width and tension. Crowned faces help centre the belt. Heavy drives need pulleys with proven shell and weld quality, balanced and stress relieved.

Wear, repair and safety

Look for worn lagging, shell damage and bearing noise. Re-lagging is often cheaper than a new pulley. Pulleys are nip points, so fit guards and lock out before any work.

Under the Mine Health and Safety Act and the OHS Act Driven Machinery Regulations, guarding of moving parts is a legal duty, not an option. When a drum is out for repair, check shaft runout, bearing seats and shell welds as well as the lagging. Plan the work for a scheduled shutdown, and ask whether the supplier can re-lag on site to save removal time and cost. Ask for a written scope that lists lagging type, groove pattern and bonding method, so quotes can be compared fairly.

Comparing conveyor pulleys quotes

Prices change with rubber and steel costs, the exchange rate and stock levels. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact specification: width, carcass and strength, cover grade and thickness, or the part number, size and standard.
  • Quantity and units: per metre, per roll, per item or per set, and any minimum order or cutting charge.
  • Lead time: ex stock, or imported or made to order, and how long that takes.
  • Delivery and VAT: transport to site, offloading of heavy rolls, whether VAT is included and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Pulley position and drive or non-drive duty
  • Diameter, face width and shaft size
  • Belt width, type and tension if known
  • Lagging type or re-lag only
  • Site location and shutdown date

Frequently asked questions

Do you manufacture conveyor pulleys?
No. ConveyorBelting.co.za is a free quote-request service. We send your request to independent pulley manufacturers, workshops and suppliers, who quote you directly. There is no cost to submit and no obligation to accept a quote.
When should I replace pulley lagging?
Re-lag when the grooves or rubber are worn smooth, when the lagging is lifting or when the belt slips under normal load. Ceramic lagging lasts longer than rubber in tough conditions. Early replacement protects both the belt cover and the drive.
Rubber or ceramic lagging?
Rubber lagging is cheaper and fine for light to medium duty. Ceramic lagging gives better grip and wear life on high-tension or wet drives, though it costs more. Ask suppliers to recommend based on tension, belt speed and wet or dusty conditions.
What do I need to give for a pulley quote?
Provide pulley type, diameter, face width, shaft size, bearing details, belt width and tension. For re-lagging, give the drum size and lagging type. Drawings or photos help suppliers quote accurately and avoid repeated questions.
