Conveyors in Kathu

Kathu is the hub of the Sishen iron ore operations in the Kalahari and a service base for manganese and other mines in the Kuruman and Hotazel area. Iron ore is mined in opencast pits, crushed and screened, then loaded onto trains for the long export line to the Port of Saldanha, with conveyors moving ore through the plant and onto stockyards. The ore is dense and abrasive, summers pass 40 degrees, and red Kalahari sand blows into everything, which accelerates wear on idler bearings, pulleys and scrapers. Contractors, fabricators and splicing teams have built up around the mines, and suppliers deliver from Gauteng and Kimberley.

Typical PVC conveyor belts requests in the area come from:

Open-pit iron ore, manganese and diamond mines: sample and laboratory lines only, as bulk ore needs rubber belting
Cement, steel and process plants: light assembly, packing and paper-converting lines in process plants
Warehouses and distribution centres: parcel sortation, loading and courier belts in warehouses and airports
Quarries and sand mines: very limited, for office and laboratory sample handling
Grain silos, sugar mills and packhouses: packhouse, sorting and grain-bagging lines using PVC and PU belts
